CEA Test — Colorectal Cancer Marker

Introduction

CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen) is one of the earliest discovered tumor markers, commonly elevated in colorectal cancer and other digestive cancers. It serves as a supportive tool for risk assessment, treatment monitoring, and recurrence surveillance.

Note: High CEA does not always indicate cancer. Smokers and patients with benign diseases (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, liver disease) may also show elevated levels.

Why Take a CEA Test?

  • Risk assessment: Provides supporting evidence when colorectal cancer is suspected.
  • Treatment monitoring: Tracks CEA changes before, during, and after therapy.
  • Recurrence follow-up: Used for post-surgery or post-treatment surveillance.

Method & Workflow

A venous blood sample is collected to measure serum CEA. Results must be interpreted with colonoscopy, imaging, and clinical evaluation.

Factors & Notes

  • Smokers may naturally have higher CEA levels.
  • Benign conditions (IBD, pancreatitis, hepatitis) can also elevate CEA.
  • Serial trends are more valuable than a single measurement.

Who Should Consider Testing?

  • Patients clinically suspected of colorectal cancer
  • Confirmed cases under treatment monitoring
  • Post-surgery or post-treatment patients for recurrence follow-up
  • Individuals undergoing a digestive tumor marker panel

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Does high CEA always mean colorectal cancer?
A: No. Smoking, liver disease, pancreatitis, and IBD may also elevate CEA.

Q2: Can CEA be used for general colorectal cancer screening?
A: No. It is not reliable as a stand-alone screening tool and should be combined with colonoscopy and imaging.

Q3: How should I interpret CEA results?
A: Results should be reviewed with clinical history, imaging, and other tumor markers, focusing on trends over time.
